Eden Valley receives National Storytelling Network Grant
7/7/2010
I am happy to announce that EVE has been the recipient of a National Storytelling Network Member Grant for development of a story about Grandma Emma Gatewood of Gallia County Ohio. In 1955, when she was 68 years old (and had already raised 11 children), she became the first woman to ever hike the entire Appalachian Trail! Before she died in 1973 she had hiked the AT several times, completed hikes in Oregon, Vermont and Pennsylvania. She was a charter member of the Buckeye Trail Association which has The Grandma Gatewood Trail named after her.
We are applying for grants to do a video and a first-person character program about Emma Gatewood in addition to adding her story to our storytelling programs. We will be working with Peter Huston of Big Dog Hill Films on the video. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about the Buckeye Trail Association, you can see a PowerPoint program about their 50th anniversary on our website: BTA information I was honored to be the "voice" for this program which was put together by the Association for their anniversary celebration.
Watch our website for more information about this exciting new project. In the meantime, if you have any stories or memories of your own about Emma Gatewood that you would like to share as we research her life, please contact me via e-mail or call me at 440-284-4828. If you would like to support this project with a tax-deductible donation, you can send a check made payable to Eden Valley Enterprises; 1250 East River St., Elyria, Ohio 44035 or pay online with PayPal by pressing the "Donate" button on our contact page: Eden Valley Contract Information
